Shattered Sanity

A thrilling survival horror game, set in a desolate asylum haunted by demonic creatures that are the cause of its gruesome demise. Players must rely on their wits to evade and outsmart these terrifying entities to escape the facility with their lives.

Shattered Sanity was the capstone project for my Bachelor’s Degree in Game Design. I worked alongside five other designers over four months to create a game from ideation to completion.

Project Start

While working on this project, all six designers filled many design roles during the first two months to make a minimum-viable product. I spent this time developing the state machine that would determine the enemy’s behaviors, developing a checkpoint system, and prototyping different enemy types and puzzle mechanics.

Project End

During the last two months of development, we had the opportunity to take on specialized roles. At this point, I focused on Level Design. I created the first level, The Basement as a blockmesh during the third month, and populated the environment with final assets during the final month of development

Post Mortem

Working on Shattered Sanity was my first experience in creating a fully realized game from start to finish. Thanks to this project, I was able to work alongside other talented designers and artists to create an entertaining experience for others to enjoy. I not only learned a lot about designing games in Unreal Engine, but also how to utilize project management tools like Jira and Confluence to make a living game design document and manage ongoing tasks as they are created, in progress, reviewed, and completed.

In the end, I and the rest of Team Lunar encountered and overcame numerous struggles to develop a game we all feel proud of. Thanks to this experience, we all came away with a greater understanding of our areas of study and the career goals we aspire to achieve.
